RASOR @CHy-15 – WMO, ASI-ISPRA-DPC side Event

Applications of the RASOR platform are presented at a side event of the WMO 15th Commission of Hydrology (http://meetings.wmo.int/CHy-15/SitePages/Session%20Information.aspx) on “National space programs in support of environmental and civil protection hydrological applications” organized by ISPRA, ASI and the Italian Civil Protection Department. RASOR will show the added value of EO data in assessing Hydro-meteorological disasters with the aid of a dedicated platform.

RASOR&DRIHM in support of the Disaster assessment of Hurricane Matthew (Haiti)

RASOR and DRIHM platform combine to support modelling of the impact caused by Hurricane Matthew in the western part of Haiti.
The DRIHM platform was able to simulate the wind pattern from the Hurricane using Hi-res WRF Meteorological modelling simulation. The WRF model was run, using Grid and super computing computational resources that are easily accessible through the DRIHM portal. Wind fields, served in standardized format (NETCDF-CF) are then easily imported into the RASOR platform that allows to compute the impact caused by the wind gusts. Exposure was extracted from the Copernicus activation products and further characterised in the RASOR platform to be used for Vulnerability assessment.
The impact was computed for the different hit sites in Haiti. RASOR also allows the user to transform categorical damage available from EO analysis (in this case provided by Copernicus EMS) into economica damage. This allowed the comparison between the “observed” and “modelled” damage in Haiti.
For the western part of Haiti the match between the model estimate and the one derived from observation stays within 20 percent. This is an indication that the DRIHM-RASOR modelling framework can provide with 3 days lead time a reasonable estimate of damage that can be used in a preparedness framework.

RASOR Supports CNIGS and activities in Haiti in the wake of Matthew

RASOR is supporting the humanitarian actions in Haiti that has been struck by the super-Hurricane Matthew. RASOR provides simulated flood damage assessment layers for the area of Les Gonaives, that suffered in the past of heavy flooding during hurricanes overpasses. RASOR does within its open and free philosophy to support DRR and Humanitarian Action worldwide.

RASOR EC WS in Brussels 9th June 2016

RASOR Project will presented in a information Workshop next Thursday (9th June 2016) to the European Commission DGs and Programmes. The event will be held at Centre Borschette building (CCAB) – Room AB/3.04, with the aim to showcase the project outputs and the possible interest from the various DGs in the platform applications to support their actions and activities.


RASOR Project presented at the 10th Copernicus User Forum in Brussels. The RASOR platform was presented within the Italian contribution to the Forum showing the potential for application of RASOR in the Copernicus Context with specific focus in the Value added services to the National Collaborative Ground Segment – Extended. the presentation was well received by the user forum and interest has been raised. The platform has been proposed as a tool to transform EO and non-EO products (with special focus on Copernicus http://www.copernicus.eu/main/services) into services for the end user, providing an “expert” synthesis of complex information, to get to the quantitative analysis of impacts whenever it is needed (e.g. emergencies, climate change, land management).

Risk is materialising more and more following more complex and interconnected pathways due to different reasons: Climate Change, increased population density, increased social interconnection and fragility. In that way, fatalities and economic losses due to natural disasters have increased during the last years, not only due to the former reasons but also to the consequent concatenation of possible series of cascade events. As a specific situation of exposed elements, Cultural Heritage (CH) represents the identity of a given territory in a specific time. Natural Hazards and geomorphological process played a fundamental role for their build and conservation. In order to understand safety, stability and conservation conditions, one of the main pillars is provided by the monitoring, analysis, assessment and management. The assessment and mitigation of the impact of natural hazards and their connectivity is a very important scope of analysis. It is necessary to develop new studies to quantify the risks and the relationship between different hazards affecting a given area in order to understand their connections and to provide a better evaluation of the susceptibility and the vulnerability. Understanding risk in a holistic sense and with the help of new technologies is becoming a global priority in order to increase social resilience. RASOR Community of Practice to be launched at UR 2016 (Venice 17 May 2016)

On 17th May 2016 the RASOR Community of Practice will be holding its first meeting.
The meeting will be held in Venice as an official Side Event of the Understanding Risk Forum 2016.

The event aims to bring together beta users and new users of the RASOR platform to share experiences on how the platform can be used free of charge by the global community for multi-hazard risk assessment and full-cycle risk management. This is the launch of a new community of practice aimed at sharing lessons learned and best practices in risk assessment. The event will showcase actual experience in RASOR use by ‘beta users’ who began using RASOR for risk assessment in fall 2015. Technical breakout sessions will be led by CNIGS, Deltares, the CIMA Foundation, DPC and INGV.

The RASOR Project has set aside funding to support participation of key users presenting at the event.


Validation Mission @Italy

On the 2nd of March DPC (our Main Italian Supporting Partner) hosted the RASOR italian Validation Mission. the RASOR platform was presented and tested in front of people coming from the different offices and department of DPC and a numerous delegation of INGV that was not yet exposed to the RASOR Platform. the discussion on the use of RASOR for multi-hazard scenarios evaluation was lively and produced interesting outcomes and suggestions that will be taken into account for the final release of the Platform.

Validation Mission @Greece

The RASOR team concluded successfully the Validation mission to Greece. the RASOR platform was presented to the GSCP (our main supporting partner in Greece) and a number of stakeholders including one coming from Bulgaria. The meeting developed a lively discussion the Santorini study Case and the potential for expansion one the Platform in other sites in Greece and in the Balkans.

RASOR Validation Mission in Indonesia

The RASOR team just concluded a very successful validation mission in Jakarta, Indonesia. The mission included a Validation session at BNPB on February 2nd hosted at BNPB headquarter, in collaboration with the Indonesia National Platform for Disaster Reduction/PLANAS, and a related one-day event at ITB in Bandung on February 4th, in collaboration with the Geohazard Supersites and Natural Laboratories (GSNL) initiative.
On the 3rd of February BPBD Jakarta hosted a second validation session.
All validation session concluded successfully.
